#FAUNA : Roosevelt's Elk
SCIENTIFIC NAME : Cervus elephas STATUS : Roosevelt's elk are common locally. HABITAT : Temperate rainforest, Oregon, U.S.A. SIZE : 137 - 152cm at the shoulder. WEIGHT : Males can weigh from 272 - 454kg. Females weigh up to 272kg. Roosevelt's elk are the largest subspecies of red deer in the world, secondly only to the moose for the title of the giants of the deer family. The males get huge in preparation for the breeding season, usually in autumn to early winter, and the big males compete with each other to collect a harem. The age of a male can be calculated by the size of its antlers--- the more spikes or 'tines' the older the male. |

#FAUNA : Andean Hillstar HummingBird
SCIENTIFIC NAME : Oreotrochilus estella STATUS : Endangered through loss of habitat. HABITAT : Mountain slopes, Central and South America. SIZE : 8 - 12cm WEIGHT : 6 - 8kg Food is pretty scarce 3 miles up an Ecuador mountainside, so these tiny birds have an indigenious way to conserve energy through the cold night. They enter a state of suspended animation. Their heart slows from 1,000 beats a minute right down until it's virtually undetectable, and they hardly draw a breath. They effectively shut down, like any hibernating animal, only in their case they hibernate every single night of the year. |
